Scientific name: Hypsophrys nicaraguensis

Maximum size and lifespan:

Max Size about 9–10 inches (23–25 cm) in length, with males typically larger and more elongated than females.

In captivity, they can live 10–12 years with good care.

Recommended aquarium size, water changes, and water parameters:

  • Minimum tank size: 75 gallons for the pair. Larger is preferred for community setup

  • Water changes: 25–35% weekly to maintain stability and water quality.

  • Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C).

  • pH: 7.0–8.0.

Tankmates:
Nicaraguense Cichlids are considered one of the more peaceful Central American cichlids, though they can still be territorial, especially during breeding. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other medium to large Central American cichlids with similar temperament (Rainbow Cichlid, Firemouth, Salvini if not overly aggressive).

  • Robust catfish (Plecos, larger Synodontis, Doradids).

  • Large, fast-moving characins (Silver Dollars, larger Tetras).
Avoid very small fish, overly aggressive cichlids (like Midas or Red Devil), or delicate species.

Diet:
Omnivorous, with a preference for plant matter. A balanced diet includes:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets (staple).

  • Vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, peas, or spirulina-based foods.

  • Occasional protein in the form of earthworms, shrimp, krill, or bloodworms.

  • Avoid excessive fatty or meaty foods to prevent digestive issues.

Overview:
The Nicaraguense Cichlid is admired for its striking coloration—males often display metallic blue, gold, and green with black striping, while females show a golden body with a prominent black band. They are generally less aggressive than many Central American cichlids, making them a good choice for mixed cichlid aquariums. Active, hardy, and intelligent, they are well-suited for experienced hobbyists seeking a colorful, moderately peaceful cichlid.

Natural environment:
Native to lakes and slow-moving rivers of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. They are often found in sandy-bottomed habitats with scattered rocks, submerged wood, and aquatic plants, where they graze on algae, detritus, and small invertebrates.

Breeding:
Nicaraguense Cichlids are biparental substrate spawners, though they sometimes exhibit semi-mouthbrooding behaviors. Pairs form strong bonds and are attentive parents. Spawning usually occurs on flat rocks or inside caves. Females lay several hundred eggs, which are guarded and fanned by both parents. After hatching, fry may be moved around by the parents and protected until free-swimming. Fry can be raised on baby brine shrimp and powdered fry foods.
