Scientific name: Hypancistrus sp. L333
Maximum size and lifespan: The L333 King Tiger Pleco typically grows to around 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) in length. With proper care, they can live 10–15 years in captivity.
Recommended aquarium size, water changes, and care: A minimum tank size of 30-40 gallons (150 liters) is recommended for a single adult or small group.
They prefer warm, well-oxygenated water with a temperature of 79–86°F (26–30°C), a pH between 6.0–7.5
A strong filtration system and good water flow are essential, as they come from fast-flowing rivers. Regular water changes of 30–40% weekly are important to maintain pristine water quality. Provide caves, driftwood, and rocky structures for hiding and territory.
Tankmates: The King Tiger Pleco is generally peaceful but can be territorial with its own kind, especially males. Suitable tankmates include small to medium-sized peaceful fish such as tetras, rasboras, peaceful cichlids, rainbowfish, Ram and Apistos, or other bottom dwellers like Corydoras (as long as enough space and hiding spots are provided). Avoid aggressive species or other plecos that may compete for territory.
Diet: L333s are omnivorous but lean toward a more protein-rich diet than many plecos. They will readily accept sinking carnivore pellets, wafers, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and some vegetable matter like blanched zucchini or cucumber. A varied diet with emphasis on meaty foods will promote good health and coloration.
Overview: The L333 King Tiger Pleco is a striking and highly sought-after Loricariid, recognized for its bold black and white striped patterning. They are nocturnal and reclusive, often emerging at night to feed. While not as difficult to keep as some of their relatives, they do require stable, clean water and a well-structured environment to thrive.
Natural environment: In the wild, L333 plecos are found in the Rio Xingu, Brazil, where they inhabit rocky, fast-flowing waters. The oxygen-rich currents and abundance of crevices in their habitat shape their need for strong water movement, high oxygen levels, and hiding places in the aquarium.
Breeding: Breeding L333s is possible in captivity and follows the typical cave-spawning behavior of Hypancistrus. A mature pair will select a cave, where the male guards the eggs after spawning. Maintaining slightly warmer water (82–86°F / 28–30°C) with high oxygenation often encourages breeding. The male fans the eggs until hatching, and fry can be raised on newly hatched brine shrimp, crushed pellets, and other small protein foods. Patience and providing the right cave structures are key to success.
