Maximum Size and Lifespan:
The gold clown knife fish can grow up to 30-36" in captivity, though most in aquariums average around 18–24 inches. In the wild, they can exceed this size. With proper care, they can live 10–15+ years.

Recommended Aquarium Size, Water Change, and Care:
Because of their eventual size and active swimming habits, a minimum of 180 gallons is recommended for a single adult, though larger tanks are preferable. Juveniles Can be raised in smaller 40-125 gallons for better observation.

 They require strong filtration and good oxygenation, as they are sensitive to poor water conditions. Weekly water changes of 30–50% help maintain stable parameters.

Tank Conditions:

• Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

• pH: 6.5–7.5

• They appreciate dim lighting, soft substrate, and hiding areas made from large driftwood, caves, or PVC pipes. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as they are powerful jumpers.

Tankmates:
Gold clown knife fish are generally peaceful but predatory. They will eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouth. Suitable companions include:

• Large peaceful fish (e.g., silver dollars, large barbs, bichirs, arowanas, pacu)

• Avoid small or aggressive tankmates (such as cichlids that may nip at their long fins).

Diet:
They are carnivorous and should be fed a protein-rich diet. In captivity, they accept:

• Frozen foods  such as Shrimp, tilapia, and jumbo bloodworms
  

• High-quality carnivore pellets and sticks
  
  

Overview:
The gold clown knife fish is a large, elegant, and nocturnal predator with a striking golden body and distinctive knife-like shape. They are best suited for experienced aquarists due to their space requirements and size. Though shy when young, they often become more confident with age and may recognize their owners at feeding time.

Natural Environment:
In the wild, Chitala ornata inhabits slow-moving rivers, lakes, and flooded plains of Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. They prefer murky, heavily vegetated waters with plenty of cover.

Breeding:
Breeding in captivity is very rare due to their size and space requirements. In nature, they breed during the rainy season. Males build nests near submerged structures, and females lay eggs which the male guards until hatching. Successful spawning in home aquariums is uncommon, typically only occurring in very large, specialized setups.
