Scientific Name: Tetraodon lineatus
Maximum Size and Lifespan:
The Fahaka Puffer can grow up to 18 inches (45 cm) in length. With proper care, they can live 10–15 years in captivity.
Recommended Aquarium Size:
A single adult Fahaka Puffer requires a minimum of 120 gallons (475–570 liters) for an adult, with larger tanks preferred for ease of maintenance and swimming space. Juveniles can be kept in 30-90 gallon for better observation, but must be upgraded as they grow rapidly.
Water Changes and Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
-
pH: 7.0–8.0
-
Large, messy feeders, Fahakas need strong filtration and frequent water changes of 30–50% weekly to maintain pristine conditions.
Tankmates:
Fahaka Puffers are highly aggressive and territorial. They are best kept alone, as they will attack or kill most tankmates, including other puffers. Some rare cases exist where they may tolerate fast-moving fish or bottom-dwellers in very large aquariums, but this is risky and not recommended.
Diet:
Fahaka Puffers are strict carnivores and require a varied diet of hard-shelled foods to prevent overgrown teeth. Their diet should include:
-
Snails, mussels, clams, and crayfish
-
Crabs, shrimp, and other crustaceans
-
Occasional frozen fish and shrimp
-
Worms and other protein-rich foods
Feeding frequency is usually every other day for adults and daily for juveniles.
Overview:
The Fahaka Puffer is a large, fascinating freshwater predator admired for its intelligence, unique behavior, and striking banded coloration. It is a true "wet pet," known to recognize its keeper and display personality. However, its extreme aggression and dietary needs make it suitable only for experienced aquarists with the resources to provide a large, species-only tank and steady supply of shelled foods.
Natural Environment:
Native to the Nile River and other river systems across Africa, Tetraodon lineatus inhabits large freshwater rivers, lakes, and floodplains. They are solitary ambush predators, feeding on crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates in the wild.
Breeding:
Breeding Fahaka Puffers in captivity is virtually unheard of. In the wild, they are egg layers, with the female depositing eggs on a flat surface and the male fertilizing them. No confirmed successful breeding reports exist in aquariums, largely due to their aggression toward conspecifics and size requirements.
