Maximum Size and Lifespan:
Adult Geophagus brasiliensis can reach up to 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) in length. With proper care, they can live 10–12 years in captivity.

Recommended Aquarium Size, Water Changes, and Care:
A single adult or breeding pair should be kept in at least a 65 gallon (280–340 L) aquarium, with larger tanks required for groups or mixed setups. Provide weekly water changes of 30–40% to maintain high water quality, as these cichlids prefer clean, well-oxygenated water.
Ideal parameters include:

• Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

• pH: 6.5–7.5

They appreciate a sandy substrate that allows natural sifting behavior and plenty of rocks, driftwood, and sturdy plants for territories and cover. Geophagus brasiliensis are sensitive to poor water quality, so efficient filtration and regular maintenance are essential.

Tankmates:
This species can be semi-aggressive, especially during breeding. Ideal tankmates are other robust South American cichlids, larger characins, or peaceful catfish like Corydoras or Plecostomus species.

Avoid small or timid fish, as they may be harassed or eaten. When housed with other cichlids, ensure adequate space and line-of-sight breaks to reduce aggression.

Diet:
An omnivorous feeder, Geophagus brasiliensis accepts a wide range of foods. Offer a balanced diet including:

• High-quality cichlid pellets

• Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and shrimp/tilapia

• Spirulina based foods for well balanced diet

They constantly sift substrate for detritus and microorganisms, so fine sand is recommended to prevent mouth injury.

Overview:
Known for their striking iridescent blue-green “pearl” pattern and hardy nature, Geophagus brasiliensis are one of the most recognized Geophagus species. They exhibit classic Geophagus “eartheater” behavior—filtering sand through their gills in search of food. While hardy, they can become territorial as they mature, especially in confined spaces. Their intelligence and striking coloration make them a centerpiece species for large South American biotope aquariums.

Natural Environment:
Geophagus brasiliensis are native to southeastern Brazil, found in slow-moving rivers, streams, and lagoons with sandy or muddy bottoms and scattered rocks. The water is typically warm, slightly acidic to neutral, and often stained with tannins from decaying organic matter.

Breeding:
This species is a substrate-spawning cichlid that forms monogamous pairs. The female typically lays eggs on a flat rock or cleared surface, which both parents guard aggressively. After hatching, the fry are often moved to shallow pits in the substrate. Geophagus brasiliensis are excellent parents, with both guarding and tending the young. To encourage spawning, provide slightly warmer water (80–82°F / 27–28°C) and frequent partial water changes. Feed fry with newly hatched brine shrimp and crushed flakes once free-swimming.
