Scientific Name
Xiphophorus hellerii
Maximum Size and Lifespan
-
Size: Up to 5–6 inches (12–15 cm), with males usually a bit smaller than females (excluding the male’s extended “sword” tail).
-
Lifespan: Typically 3–5 years with proper care.
Recommended Aquarium Size, Water Changes, and Care
-
Tank Size: At least 20 gallons for a small group, though larger tanks (30+ gallons) are recommended for multiple swordtails due to their active swimming.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
-
pH: 7.0–8.3
-
-
Water Changes: About 25–30% weekly to maintain water quality and control waste buildup.
-
Care Level: Easy to moderate – they are hardy, but males can be territorial, so space and balanced male-to-female ratios are important.
Tankmates
Albino Kohaku Swordtails are generally peaceful but active. Best tankmates include:
-
Other livebearers (platies, mollies, guppies)
-
Peaceful community fish (tetras, rasboras, danios, corydoras)
-
Dwarf cichlids (like apistos or rams, if water parameters align), Rainbowfish, Small to medium sized catfish and plecos
Diet
Swordtails are omnivores.
-
Staple Diet: High-quality flake or pellet food.
-
Supplements: Frozen Bloodworms and brine shrimp
-
Feeding Frequency: 1–2 times daily, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes.
Overview
Albino Kohaku Swordtails are a selectively bred variety of the common swordtail, prized for their striking red-and-white coloration and elongated tail extension in males. They are hardy, adaptable, and great for community tanks. Their active swimming and vibrant color make them a centerpiece in aquariums.
Natural Environment
In the wild, Xiphophorus hellerii originates from Central America, inhabiting rivers, streams, and densely vegetated waters in Mexico, Honduras, and Belize. They prefer areas with steady flow and plenty of hiding spots among plants. The albino kohaku variant, however, is captive-bred and does not exist naturally.
Breeding
-
Type: Livebearers – females give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.
-
Ratio: Keep 1 male to 2–3 females to reduce stress from constant male courtship.
-
Gestation: Around 4–6 weeks, after which the female produces 20–100 fry.
-
Fry Care: Adults may eat the fry, so provide dense plants, breeding grass, or a separate nursery tank. Feed fry with crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp, or specialized fry food.
-
Breeding is relatively easy, making swordtails a favorite among beginner breeders.
