They are hardy and adaptable, but thrive best in well-maintained tanks with stable water conditions and a calm environment.

Natural Environment:

Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, particularly in slow-moving tributaries, creeks, and swamps with dense vegetation and leaf litter. These waters are typically warm, soft, and slightly acidic, often stained with tannins from decomposing organic material.

Breeding:

Congo Tetras can be bred in captivity with some effort.

  • Sexing: Males are more colorful and have longer dorsal and caudal fins

  • Breeding Setup:

    • Use a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water (pH ~6.5, temp 77–80°F)

    • Provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops

  • Spawning:

    • They are egg scatterers

    • Adults should be removed post-spawning to avoid eating eggs

  • Hatching:

    • Eggs hatch in about 6 days

    • Feed Live Baby Brine and crushed flakes/pellets once fry are larger
