Scientific Name: Acipenser transmontanus (White Diamond variant)

Maximum Size and Lifespan:
The White Diamond Sturgeon, a selectively bred color morph of the White Sturgeon, can reach impressive lengths of up to 6 feet in captivity, though most in aquaria stay around 3–4 feet (90–120 cm). In the wild, this species can exceed 12 feet (360 cm). Lifespan is exceptionally long—typically 50 to 100 years under proper care.

Recommended Aquarium Size, Water Change and Care:
Due to their size and activity level, the White Diamond Sturgeon requires an extremely large, well-oxygenated, and cool-water environment. A minimum of 300-600 gallons is recommended for juveniles, with larger custom ponds or indoor tanks exceeding 1,000-1500 gallons for adults.

Perform 30-50% water changes weekly to maintain pristine water quality, as these fish are sensitive to poor conditions. Ensure strong water flow, ample dissolved oxygen, and cool temperatures between 50–65°F (10–18°C). Use smooth substrates like rounded gravel or sand to prevent skin abrasions on their delicate undersides. Provide open swimming space and avoid sharp decorations.

Tankmates:
Peaceful but large—best kept with other coldwater, non-aggressive species of similar size and environmental requirements. Suitable companions include koi, large coldwater catfish, or other sturgeons such as Siberian or Albino Sterlet. Avoid tropical species, aggressive fish, or warm-water tankmates, as sturgeons cannot tolerate high temperatures or competition for sinking food.

Diet:
White Diamond Sturgeons are benthic feeders, relying on their barbels to locate food on the substrate. Offer a high-protein sinking diet, including specialized sturgeon pellets, earthworms, bloodworms, krill, and shellfish.

Avoid floating foods, as these fish feed strictly from the bottom.

Overview:
The White Diamond Sturgeon is a striking, pale morph of the North American White Sturgeon, valued for its glistening silver-white coloration and graceful swimming. They are ancient, hardy fish in the right conditions but require very large, cold, and well-oxygenated systems—making them best suited to experienced keepers or large pond environments. Their calm temperament and prehistoric beauty make them a centerpiece species in public or private coldwater displays.

Natural Environment:
In nature, Acipenser transmontanus inhabits large river systems and estuaries along the Pacific coast of North America, from California to Alaska. They thrive in cool, oxygen-rich waters with sandy or silty bottoms where they forage for invertebrates, crustaceans, and small fish. Juveniles often remain in freshwater, while adults may migrate to estuarine or coastal regions.

Breeding:
Captive breeding of White Diamond Sturgeons is extremely rare and challenging due to their large size, long maturation period (10–20 years), and specific environmental triggers. In aquaculture or commercial breeding facilities, reproduction is typically induced hormonally under controlled conditions. Spawning occurs in fast-flowing rivers over gravel substrates, with females producing hundreds of thousands of adhesive eggs. Natural breeding in private aquaria is virtually unheard of.
