Maximum Size and Lifespan:

  • Maximum Size: Typically 30 inches in captivity, Females can sometimes grow larger

  • Lifespan: 10–20 years


Recommended Aquarium Size:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 120 gallons (280–450 liters) for adults

  • Juveniles can be kept in 40-90 gallons for better observation

  • Provide plenty of hiding spots with rocks, PVC pipes, or driftwood

  • Must have a tight-fitting lid with all holes covered— these eels are escape artists!


Water Changes and General Care:

  • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

  • pH: 7.0–8.5

  • Water Changes: 20-50% weekly recommended; eels are messy eaters

  • Use a canister filter or sump


Tankmates:

  • Semi-aggressive, predatory behavior

  • Best kept with:

    • Larger Semi Aggressive Cichlids, Geophagus, Electric Blue Acara, Peacock Bass,Stingrays, Arowana, Large Catfish and Plecos(with appropriate sizing)

     

  • Avoid:

    • Small fish (will be eaten)

    • Invertebrates (shrimps, crabs)

    • Other eels unless tank is large and offers individual hides for each eel.


Diet:

  • Carnivore – strictly meaty foods

  • Feed 4-5 times per week with:

    • Frozen shrimp tilapia, bloodworms, and mysis/krill shrimp

    • With time they will learn to accept pellets. Sinking carnivore/massivore pellets are the best for them
    • Feeding tongs recommended for target feeding and to avoid accidental bites


Overview:

The Tiger Moray Eel is a unique moray eel species known for being the only moray eel species to live in freshwater all its life. This species has an elongated, muscular body, olive to yellow coloration with irregular black spots and blotches. It's nocturnal and loves tight hiding places. Overtime with consistent feeding they're known for being very comfortable with their owners and will beg for food every time you approach the tank. 


Natural Environment:

  • Found in coastal estuaries, rivers+streams, mangroves, and lagoons in Indonesia


Breeding:

  • No known successful breeding in captivity

  • Males are known for having a smaller body and head with a more slender body. Females are larger and thicker with a longer snout.
