Maximum size and lifespan: Reaches about 2.5"; lifespan typically 8–10 years in good conditions.

Recommended aquarium size, water change, and care:

• Minimum tank size of 20 gallons for a small school, larger is better.

• Keep in groups of at least 6–8, as they are shoaling fish and display natural behaviors in numbers.

• Weekly water changes of 25–40% with stable, clean, and well-oxygenated water.

• Water parameters: 22–26 °C (72–79 °F)

• pH 6.0–7.2

• Use soft sand or smooth gravel substrate to protect their barbels. Provide driftwood, smooth rocks, and shaded areas for cover.

Tankmates: Very peaceful bottom-dweller suited to community aquariums. Good companions include small tetras, rasboras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, other Corydoras, hatchetfish, and small Loricariids. Avoid aggressive or overly large fish.

Diet: Omnivore with a preference for meaty foods. Accepts sinking catfish pellets, wafers, and enjoys frozen/live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Supplement diet with quality flake/pellet and occasional vegetable matter for variety. Feed a mix to ensure balanced nutrition.

Overview: Corydoras punctatus is a hardy and attractive spotted cory with a silvery base color covered in small dark speckles. Active and peaceful, they are well suited to planted community tanks. Their group-oriented nature and constant foraging activity make them lively and endearing additions.

Natural environment: Found in the Guianas, particularly Guyana and Suriname, in small rivers, streams, and floodplain areas with sandy or muddy substrates. Often inhabit shallow zones with leaf litter, aquatic plants, and gentle water flow.

Breeding: Egg-scattering species. Breeding is often triggered by large, cooler water changes simulating the rainy season. During spawning, males chase females, leading to the classic Corydoras “T-position.” Eggs are placed on plants, glass, or hard surfaces. Adults do not protect eggs and may eat them, so breeders often remove eggs to a separate rearing tank. Fry start with infusoria or liquid fry food before progressing to baby brine shrimp and microworms.
