Scientific Name: Serrasalmus sanchezi

Maximum Size and Lifespan:
The Sanchezi piranha typically grows to about 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) in captivity, though in the wild they may reach slightly larger sizes. With proper care, they can live 10–12 years in an aquarium environment.

Recommended Aquarium Size, Water Changes, and Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75 gallons for a single specimen. This species is highly aggressive and best kept alone. Juveniles can be raised in 30-50 gallon tank for better observation

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

    • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Water Changes: Perform 30-40% water changes biweekly/weekly to maintain water quality and reduce nitrate buildup.

  • Care: Provide strong filtration, moderate current, and a secure lid (these fish can jump). Decor should include hiding places with driftwood and hardy plants or artificial foliage, as they may uproot or damage live plants. Make sure to give lots of swimming space.

Tankmates:
The Sanchezi piranha is extremely aggressive, They are best kept alone as a display specimen.

Diet:
An opportunistic carnivore, their diet in captivity should consist of:

  • Frozen Tilapia and Shrimp

  • Quality carnivore pellets

  • Occasional live foods (feeder fish are not recommended due to disease risk—use live insects or earthworms instead)

  • Supplement occasionally with plant matter or vegetable-based pellets to replicate wild feeding variety

Overview:
The Sanchezi piranha is a compact but highly aggressive species that demands respect and careful planning in an aquarium setting. Its deep-bodied, silver-to-gold flanks with a reddish belly (more intense in breeding males) make it visually striking. While smaller than some of its relatives, its aggression makes it one of the most dangerous piranhas to mix with other fish.

Natural Environment:
Native to Peru’s upper Amazon basin, particularly in fast-flowing tributaries and floodplain lakes, P. sanchezi inhabits areas with submerged roots, woody debris, and murky waters rich in organic matter. The environment tends to have acidic to neutral pH and warm, soft water.

Breeding:
Breeding in captivity is rare due to their solitary nature and aggression toward potential mates. In the wild, they are seasonal spawners during the rainy season, with males defending a nesting site and guarding eggs until hatching. In aquaria, if breeding is attempted, a very large, heavily structured tank and careful introduction of a compatible pair are essential—but fights and fatalities are common. Eggs, if laid, hatch within 2–3 days, and fry become free-swimming within about a week.
