Scientific Name: Acipenser ruthenus (Albino Sterlet Sturgeon)
Maximum Size and Lifespan:
The Albino Sterlet can reach up to 36-48" in length, though most individuals kept in captivity average around 60–80 cm (24–31 inches). They have an impressive lifespan, living 20–30 years or longer under ideal conditions, especially when housed in large, well-maintained systems or ponds.
Recommended Aquarium Size, Water Change, and Care:
Albino Sterlets require very large, well-oxygenated, cool-water environments. A minimum of 600-1,000 gallons (3,800 L) is recommended for adult specimens, with strong filtration and ample swimming space. These fish produce significant waste and demand excellent water quality.
-
Water Temperature: 10–20°C (50–68°F)
-
pH: 7.0–8.0
-
Water Changes: 25–40% weekly to maintain low nitrate levels.
Aeration and flow are crucial — Sterlets thrive in high-oxygen, slow to moderately flowing setups that mimic riverine environments. Because they are bottom-feeding fish with sensitive barbels, use smooth gravel or sand substrates to prevent mouth damage. Avoid warm temperatures, as heat stress can be fatal.
Tankmates:
Albino Sterlets are peaceful but should only be kept with other coldwater, non-aggressive fish that will not outcompete them for food. Suitable companions include koi, goldfish, or other sturgeon species of similar size. Avoid tropical species, fin-nippers, or aggressive feeders. Tankmates should tolerate cooler water and not disturb the Sterlet’s slow feeding behavior.
Diet:
In captivity, Albino Sterlets should be fed a high-protein sinking diet formulated for sturgeon or coldwater bottom feeders. Offer sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, blackworms, chopped earthworms, and crustacean-based foods. Feed 2–3 times daily, particularly in cooler months when metabolism slows. Since Sterlets feed by touch using their barbels, ensure food reaches the bottom and is spread evenly so they can locate it easily.
Overview:
The Albino Sterlet is a striking variant of the Acipenser ruthenus, distinguished by its pale golden-white coloration and elongated, armor-plated body. Originating from rivers and lakes across Eastern Europe and Russia, it is one of the smaller and more manageable sturgeon species, though still demanding in space and water quality. These fish are ancient in lineage, dating back to the age of dinosaurs, and their unique appearance and behavior make them highly sought after by advanced aquarists and pond keepers.
Natural Environment:
In the wild, the Sterlet inhabits the cooler, well-oxygenated rivers and lakes of the Danube, Volga, and Ural basins. They prefer sandy or gravelly bottoms with moderate currents and are primarily benthic feeders, consuming insect larvae, small crustaceans, and mollusks.
Breeding:
Breeding Albino Sterlets in captivity is extremely difficult. They are migratory spawners, requiring specific temperature cycles and river-like flow to trigger reproduction. In natural settings, spawning occurs in spring when water temperatures reach around 12–17°C (54–63°F). Females lay thousands of adhesive eggs on gravel or rocky substrates, which hatch in several days. In aquaculture, breeding typically requires hormone induction and specialized facilities.
