  • Maximum Size & Lifespan:

    • Can grow up to 12–13 inches (30–33 cm)

    • Lifespan is typically 10–15 years with proper care.

  • Recommended Aquarium Size, Water Changes & Care:

    • Minimum 75 gallons for a single adult, 125+ gallons for a pair or community setup.

    • Perform 30–40% weekly water changes due to their heavy bioload.

    • Provide strong filtration, open swimming space, and hiding spots such as rocks and driftwood.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)

    • pH: 6.5–8.0 (slightly acidic to moderately alkaline)

  • Tankmates:

    • Best kept with other large, robust Central/South American cichlids (such as Jack Dempsey, Green Terror, or Severums) in spacious tanks.

    • May also work with large non-cichlid fish like plecos or silver dollars.

    • Avoid small, timid, or slow-moving species—they may be attacked.

  • Diet:

    • Omnivorous—accepts a wide variety of foods.

    • High-quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms), and vegetable matter (blanched spinach, peas, spirulina).

    • Benefit from a mixed diet to maintain coloration and health.

  • Overview:

    • The Texas Cichlid is the only cichlid native to the United States, specifically found in southern Texas and northern Mexico.

    • They are territorial, intelligent, and aggressive, making them better suited to experienced aquarists.

    • Known for their striking pearl-like spots and strong personality.

  • Natural Environment:

    • Native to the lower Rio Grande drainage and other rivers in Texas and Mexico.

    • Found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and backwaters with sandy or muddy bottoms and submerged structures for shelter.

  • Breeding:

    • Biparental substrate spawners.

    • The female lays eggs on flat surfaces (rocks, slate, or tank bottom), and both parents fiercely guard them.

    • Can lay several hundred to over 1,000 eggs.

    • Fry hatch within 3–4 days and become free-swimming in about a week, at which point parents continue to protect and guide them.
