Provide an open swimming area along with some planted sections and driftwood for shelter.

Overview:
The Mascara Barb is a striking freshwater fish from the cyprinid family, named for the black stripe under its eye resembling eyeliner. Known for their vibrant metallic bodies and active schooling behavior, they add both color and movement to community tanks. They do best in groups of 6 or more, which reduces stress and shows off their natural shoaling displays.
Natural Environment:
Native to fast-flowing rivers and streams in the Western Ghats of India, Mascara Barbs inhabit clear, well-oxygenated waters with rocky substrates and patches of aquatic vegetation. Seasonal rains cause fluctuations in water depth and flow, influencing their breeding cycles.
Breeding:
In captivity, breeding is possible but challenging, as they are egg-scattering spawners.
-
A separate breeding tank with slightly warmer water (26–27°C / 79–81°F) and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops works best.
-
Condition adults with high-quality live foods.
-
The female scatters eggs over plants or substrate; males fertilize externally.
-
Remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
-
Eggs hatch in about 24–36 hours, and fry become free-swimming after 3–4 days. They can be fed live baby brine shrimp or powdered fry food
