Scientific name: Boraras naevus
Maximum size and lifespan:
Strawberry rasboras are very small nano fish, reaching about 0.8-1" in length. With good care, they typically live 3-4 years in captivity.
Recommended aquarium size, water changes, and care:
Because of their tiny size, they can be housed in smaller aquariums, but for stability and comfort a 5-10-gallon tank or larger is recommended for a group. They thrive in stable, well-cycled aquariums with gentle filtration and plenty of plant cover. Perform 25–30% water changes weekly to maintain high water quality.
72–82°F
pH 5.0–7.0
Tankmates:
Strawberry rasboras are peaceful and delicate. They should be kept in groups of at least 8–10 for security and best coloration. Ideal tankmates are other nano, non-aggressive species such as:
-
Other small rasboras, Pygmy corydoras, Dwarf shrimp (such as Neocaridina or Caridina),Otocinclus catfish, Cardinal and Neon Tetras, Pencilfish, small peaceful plecos.
-
Avoid larger or boisterous species that may intimidate or eat them.
Diet:
They are micro-predators in the wild, feeding on tiny zooplankton, insect larvae, and microorganisms. In aquariums, they should be given:
-
High-quality micro-pellets
-
Crushed flake food
-
frozen foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro worms)
-
Powdered or finely ground prepared foods
Regular feedings of live or frozen foods will enhance their health, coloration, and breeding activity.
Overview:
The Strawberry rasbora is a striking nano fish with vibrant red coloration and contrasting dark spot markings, highly sought after for planted aquariums. Its small size and peaceful nature make it perfect for aquascapes and nano setups, provided water quality is carefully maintained.
Natural environment:
Strawberry Rasboras originates from the blackwater peat swamp forests of Borneo, Indonesia. These habitats are characterized by slow-moving, tannin-stained waters, dense vegetation, submerged roots, and leaf litter. The water is very soft, acidic, and shaded, which has shaped their adaptation to thrive in dimly lit, plant-heavy aquariums.
Breeding:
Strawberry rasboras are egg-scattering spawners with no parental care. When conditions are right, a well-conditioned pair or group will scatter eggs among fine-leaved plants or moss. Adults often consume the eggs, so if breeding is intended, provide dense plant cover or remove adults after spawning. Eggs hatch in about 24–48 hours, and fry become free-swimming within 3–5 days. They require very fine foods such as infusoria or liquid fry food at first, gradually moving on to baby brine shrimp and microworms.
