Overview:
Gold Angelfish are a selectively bred color variant of the wild Pterophyllum scalare, known for their striking yellow-gold hue and graceful, disc-shaped body. They are intelligent, personable, and form strong pair bonds, making them favorites in the hobby. With appropriate tank size, stable water conditions, and a peaceful community, they thrive and display their best colors and behavior.
Natural Environment:
Though the Gold variety does not exist in the wild, Pterophyllum scalare originates from the Amazon River Basin (especially in Peru, Brazil, and Colombia), where they inhabit:
-
Slow-moving waters like floodplains and quiet tributaries
-
Areas dense in submerged vegetation and leaf litter
-
Warm, soft, acidic water conditions
Breeding:
-
Breeding Setup: Use a separate 20–30 gallon breeding tank with a flat vertical surface (like a slate or Cone)
-
Pair Formation: Angelfish form monogamous pairs; it's best to let pairs form naturally from a group
-
Spawning Behavior: The female lays eggs in rows; the male fertilizes them. Both parents guard the eggs.
-
Egg Care: Eggs hatch in 2–3 days; fry become free-swimming in about 4-7 days
-
Feeding Fry: Start with Live baby brine shrimp and crushed flake/pellets once they grow.
